The approximately 520 dunams, over which Bar Ilan University is located, has been used as a living laboratory for four months to study the cities of the future. In collaboration with the seven authorities surrounding the campus, the research project leads the Urban Future Laboratory – the research arm of the Bar Ilan Center for Smart Cities. The head of the lab, Dr. Michelle Oren, pre-emptively criticized the smart city sector, declaring: “Anyone who is quick to declare ‘smart city’ as a passing marketing trend – is wrong and big. If the giant companies try to succeed, then in 30 years we may be able to choose to live in a city of Cisco, Microsoft, Google or Alibaba. Thus, urban planners, architects and city engineers will replace computer system administrators.
